So last week it was usual day, we got up and went in service. And had a great morning, and of course it was hot. So when we came home we were hoping to have a nice cold shower....however we had NO water!!
So Gray and I weren't really sure what the problem was, we thought maybe it just didn't fill up the day before so we waited to see what happened the next day...and sure enough it was empty again. So Gray went investigating and found out that the water tank was filling up but when the street water shut off it drained back to the street. Turns out their is a check valve that prevents this from happening.
So once he diagnosed the problem it was time to fix it.....he bought the parts and now we have water all the time!!! WOOHOOOO!!!
So Gray has now been given the nickname "todologolo" which means 'jack of all trades'. Well we think anyways.
We imagine he maybe kept busy with helping the brothers fix things.
There was another row of brothers behind us, and there was 4 to every row, where there really should be only 3...
But in one morning we were able to deliver the invitations to every house! We were all really impressed with what we were able to accomplish.
Here is the whole group of us. We totaled 21 all together, 19 on the bus and 5 in Chris and Lisa's car.
So this is Maya, it is very similar to Duverge in that it is dry, but they often have no water or electricity.
But in Duverge we have (mostly) 24 hour electricity and water generally runs once to twice a day which fills up everyone's water tanks.
Here we are climbing back into the van after we finished the morning.
Its clear to us that every city seems to just keep paving on top of the last layer and the fire hydrants are clearly unusable. We aren't really sure why they were installed in the first place seeing that the water isn't even in the pipes, but maybe they were planning for Maya to be a big metropolis......or NOT. LOL
We met these children who were playing a home made game. Its the inside of a bicycle tire and a small stick with a plastic cup attached at the end.
The game is to hold the tire in the plastic cup and run as fast as you can without the tire dropping.
They were having a blast, we even had a hard time talking to the neighbors they were laughing so loud.
So we asked to take there picture and ALL the children wanted to be a part of it, they came from all the neighboring houses.
The woman you see standing in the doorway is a bible study of Jovanni.
Some of these are her children
So once we completed as much territory as we could we began to prepare to go tot the assembly in Santo Domingo. We left on Wednesday and met with Chris and Lisa in the capital. They took us to Ikea, where we purchased some furniture. It was way overdue, we definitely need a couch. So we spent the afternoon shopping and picking out the things we needed. Then we had to place the order, this took the longest. So you can't just go up to the counter and give the product numbers to the customer service rep, you have to call a service rep on the phone and give him the numbers...this conversation is going on while service reps are standing in front of you doing not much. Then you have to give your credit card and address because we needed them to deliver. Turns out the man we gave the order to was upstairs the whole time!! He had to come down and get us to sign for the purchase.....always an adventure.
Even the Dominican's said that it was too hot for this time right now, which made me feel slightly better that I was sweating like a pig!
