The craziest thing ever to happen in Duverge!

Today was our last full day out in the ministry, so Lisa and Chris made it a good one!

We began with going to our return visits. Remember the girl I called on Tuesday and she asked 'when will you come back?' so Lisa and I went to see her today.

It went very well, she didn't have the tract anymore because her brother took it to read which is very good. We discussed one of the questions she had in the Truth Tract and then went through the introduction of the bible teach bk, and after we left we arranged that Lisa will return to begin Chapter 1. There is so much interest here, Lisa and Chris really have a hard time going to see everyone, there often isn't enough time in the day.

Chris and Lisa took us for a drive just 5 minutes passed there territory to show us the most tragic natural problem in the area.

People in the campos Las Baitoas used to have farm land near this salt water lake however for the past few years the water has been encroaching into the land. So all the people have lost there farmland and there livelihoods.  It was incredible to see the destruction, Lisa said that there has been scientists from the United States that have come to investigate the reason why the lake is rising and growing. They haven't heard if they have discovered the reason, but it appears that no matter why its happening it won't be able to stop.

As you look at the pictures you can see all the dead palm trees, that used to live on land but have now died because of the salt water overtaking them. They also took us to this one spot on the road, where the water is about to come right over the road. In a matter of months this road (one of the only roads to Haiti) will be covered in water.

We were invited over for lunch today by Bonnie and Joaquin. Gray showed them all of his new Dominican expressions and we had them in hysterics!!!!

We had such a good time, she made us this eggplant dish that is amazing! Bonnie also owns a cat, and her cat just had baby kittens.....look at how cute they are!!!!!!!!! They are only 2 days old!!!

So after lunch and our siesta we were back out in the ministry. The Friday group is at 5-7pm and what the brothers do is all the Not-at-Homes that they collected all week.  Because the month of March began and Duverge has a record of 12 auxiliary pioneers for this month we had a very large group out tonight. Tonight there were mostly sisters out, and Bonnie said that the "flowers of the congregation are out in the ministry" So Gray took a picture of the zealous examples that Duverge has here.

Here we are on our way to the territory and Gray thought he would stop and get a haircut.....

The barber just sets up shop right on the sidewalk.....Its so different here, back in Canada you would need a permit then you would need the health inspector to approve your equipment and by the time you did all this winter would have arrived and your street hair cutting business would be over! LOL----Only in Dominican!

So here is the most exciting thing that happened, maybe a bit scary too. As we were finishing our day in the service and walking back to the Kingdom Hall all of a sudden people and bikes were everywhere! But way more than usual. they were street racing and screaming and there was yelling coming from the main street. We all wondered what was going on, when a Motor Taxi driver pulled over to warn us(he knows Chris and Lisa because they have witnessed to him before). He told us it's CARNIVAL, which was supposed to be celebrated only on this past Monday(Feb.27), but is actually being honored today. The Taxi driver said that tonight if anyone is hit on a bike that there is no law and no one is charged, its a law free night. Which obviously gives everyone the permission to be out of control.

It was crazy! The Police showed up to try to contain the problem, they tear gassed everyone in the main park and were firing shots in the air to make them all calm down. It didn't work it only angered the people and they began throwing stones back at the Police Officers. So we had to be so careful on our way back to the Kingdom Hall, people were running back from the center of town because of the tear gas, we had to take the long way back just to be safe. But we made it back safely and arrived home feeling so grateful. Chris called everyone who was is service tonight to be sure that they all arrived home safely, he confirmed that all arrived to their homes safely.

We even called a brother that was working in the thick of the problem to see if he was okay, he said that the tear gas came into the Pharmacy where he works and he couldn't see or barely breath. It was so bad they actually closed the Pharmacy - Lisa said they NEVER close the Pharmacy even on Christmas Day, New Years Day. So it just indicates how dangerous it was. But it seems that all the brothers are safe and we will find out more tomorrow about the damages that are downtown.

Lisa and Chris said that this has never occurred before here, so it maybe the beginning of a new yearly trend. Time will tell.
